Course Description

 

 

Health education is an essential subject where all students acquire physical, mental, emotional and social well–being.

 

Our responsibility is to provide current information and develop skills, attitudes and behaviors that will result in making good healthy decisions throughout their lives.

 

We believe that we need cooperative efforts with the school, family and community agencies to maximize the health education program and foster positive self-direction in our students.

HEALTH MISSION STATEMENT

 

 

We the members of the Glen Ridge School System are committed to the advancement of the total health and well-being of the students of Glen Ridge.  We believe that health education is an integral part of a comprehensive approach to education.  By providing students with a broad-based foundation of knowledge which they can draw from to make responsible decisions, they will enjoy a lifetime of wellness.

 

 

Goals:

 

1.      To promote the development of good health and safety habits and an understanding of the conditions necessary for physical, mental, emotional and social well-being.

 

2.      To provide an atmosphere in which each individual will grow in his/her understanding of the responsiveness to needs and responsibilities inherent in family life.

 

3.      To equip students with a knowledge base for making wise decisions pertaining to his/her health, thus maximizing the potential for the betterment of self, family and community.

 

4.      To promote a decision-making process that will enhance the student’s ability to obtain information, solve problems, think critically and communicate effectively in today’s world.

 

5.      To involve the school, family and community agencies in a partnership to reinforce positive skills, attitudes and behaviors.

UNIT 1 – GROWTH AND DEVELOPMENT

UNIT 2 – DISEASE PREVENTION

UNIT 5 – DRUG EDUCATION

DARE program (10 classes)

           

The Glen Ridge Police Department teaches this program.  The students receive a workbook that they use for the class.  The main focus is on the different types of drugs, how to resist drugs, peer pressure and where to seek guidance. 

 

            Project Alert Program (4 classes)

 

This program is also designed to help kids resist the use of drugs.  The students watch videos and discuss the many different situations that can arise as they go through life.  Most of the activities involved in this program are group organized.
