RIDGEWOOD AVENUE HOME & SCHOOL VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

Home & School Volunteers are essential to the success of the activities planned for our children throughout the school year.  Please indicate your interest in the following areas by contacting the chairperson directly or returning this form to the office before September 12th:

 

¨      Book Fair 

o        WHAT: Annual in-school book fair, providing quality books for purchase including teacher wish lists

o        WHEN: March; Advance preparation work required

o        CHAIRPERSON RESPONSIBILITIES:  Evaluate and organize vendor; Promote event within school; Organize volunteers and fair activities, as well as set-up, break-down and class visits

o        HELP WANTED:  Volunteers for event itself

¨      Box Tops

o        WHAT: Box Tops help our school earn cash by clipping them off of participating household products

o        WHEN: Ongoing

o        CHAIRPERSON RESPONSIBILITIES:  Box Tops reminders; Collection, clipping and submission of Box Tops; Organizing Box Tops contests within school (i.e. pizza party for class that hands in the most box tops)

o        HELP WANTED:  Chairperson-In-Training

¨      Cafeteria

o        WHAT: Liaise with administration to address lunch-related issues with vendor, including promoting healthy food choices

o        WHEN: Ongoing

o        CHAIRPERSON RESPONSIBILITIES:  Field lunch-related issues and communicate these, as well as other healthy food choices, with administration to relate to vendor

o        HELP WANTED:  Committee members

¨      Class Parents

o        WHAT: Coordinate class parent volunteers

o        WHEN: September

o        CHAIRPERSON RESPONSIBILITIES:  Distribute flyer for class parent volunteers and emergency contact information;  Assign class parents per class;  Meet with class parents to communicate responsibilities and expectations;  Initiate class parent emergency contact for any relevant emergency

o         HELP WANTED:  Class Parents – Sign up now!

¨      Directory

o        WHAT: Collect, organize and publish parent/guardian contact information for general distribution

o        WHEN: August, September

o        CHAIRPERSON RESPONSIBILITIES:  Distribute and collect student questionnaire; Collect, layout, edit and publish RAS Directory, consisting primarily of parent contact information as well as other helpful RAS info 

o         HELP WANTED:  Editor for finished product; Donation of printing with credit towards business sponsoring the printing on every copy of directory

¨      Discovery

o        WHAT: After-school enrichment classes for a fee organized by H&S

o        WHEN: Fall and Winter sessions

o        CHAIRPERSON RESPONSIBILITIES:  Recruit and organize parents / teachers / professionals to teach a variety of classes for students on a wide range of non-academic subjects to provide enrichment;  Design and publish brochure and registration materials; Coordinate registration;  Communicate to teachers, students

o        HELP WANTED:  We are always looking for ideas for new classes

¨      Enrichment

o        WHAT: Organize and schedule in-school enrichment programs for the benefit of all students

o        WHEN: Ongoing; May presentation to H&S for following school year’s programs

o        CHAIRPERSON RESPONSIBILITIES:  Preview, evaluate, contract and manage school assembly programs; Attend local showcases and visit local schools for preview;  Present options and schedule to H&S;  Facilitate performers and other aspects of the programs themselves when they occur

o        HELP WANTED:  Committee members for new ideas and assistance in evaluation

¨      Field Day

o        WHAT: Work with administration to provide assistance as needed for Field Day activities

o        WHEN: June

o        CHAIRPERSON RESPONSIBILITIES:  Retain water donations and organize volunteers

o        HELP WANTED:  Volunteers day of event

¨      Global Expo

o        WHAT: Organize free, family event where students can experience the different cultures present at RAS with a display of student projects, international buffet made by families, a showcase of international arts

o        WHEN: May

o        CHAIRPERSON RESPONSIBILITIES:  Coordinate display of items, food donations, acts for showcase, volunteers;  Communicate event within school community

o        HELP WANTED:  Volunteers day of event

¨      Holiday Store

o        WHAT: Organize annual holiday store, including purchasing, setup, volunteers

o        WHEN: November, Advance preparation work required

o        CHAIRPERSON RESPONSIBILITIES:  Annual summer planning for store inventory and presentation;  Purchase, price and display gift items;  Coordinate setup, cleanup and volunteers

o        HELP WANTED:  Volunteers day of event

¨      Library

o        WHAT: Coordinate and manage library needs

o        WHEN: Ongoing

o        CHAIRPERSON RESPONSIBILITIES:  Communicate library responsibilities and coordinate parent volunteers for class coverage;  Liaise with librarian on any other library needs

o        HELP WANTED:  Volunteers needed for class coverage to checkout books, shelve returned books, read and correct books in the stacks

¨      National Education Week

o        WHAT: Coordinate National Education Week (November) and Teacher Appreciation Week (May) activities

o        WHEN: November and May

o        CHAIRPERSON RESPONSIBILITIES:  Develop ideas to show appreciation to RAS teachers, administrators and support staff during National Education Week and Teacher Appreciation Week;  Coordinate execution of those ideas including volunteers as needed

o        HELP WANTED:  Volunteers needed for cooking, delivering, presenting items for staff

¨      Newsletter

o        WHAT: Compile and publish RAS Newsletter to communicate important information

o        WHEN: Ongoing

o        CHAIRPERSON RESPONSIBILITIES:  Gather information and facts from H&S executive committee, committee chairs and other relevant parties;  Publish and distribute newsletter 4-5x throughout the year

o        HELP WANTED:  Stories and information to be included

¨      Nominating

o        WHAT: Fill positions for annual H&S committees

o        WHEN: March - June

o        CHAIRPERSON RESPONSIBILITIES:  Communicate vacant positions and associated responsibilities to parent community;  Identify interested candidates;  Present candidates to H&S in June

o        HELP WANTED:  Committee members needed as identified in Spring

¨      Publicity

o        WHAT: Provide pictures, related announcements, press releases to local newspapers

o        WHEN: Ongoing

o        CHAIRPERSON RESPONSIBILITIES:  Attend events to take pictures or arrange for pictures to be shared so that they can be submitted to papers;  Provide local papers with press releases and related announcements for RAS activities

o        HELP WANTED:  Volunteers who love to take pictures or with PR background

¨      School Photos

o        WHAT: Coordinate all activities around school photos

o        WHEN: September - October

o        CHAIRPERSON RESPONSIBILITIES:  Coordinate photographer, classroom and individual student photos day of; Subsequently coordinate orders and delivery of orders

o        HELP WANTED:  Volunteers to assist chairperson

¨      School Supplies

o        WHAT: Organize annual school supply sale and delivery

o        WHEN: May/June for orders; Summer for purchase, delivery, sorting; September for distribution

o        CHAIRPERSON RESPONSIBILITIES:  Distribute flyer; Collect orders and payment prior to school end;  Order supplies, purchase items over summer;  Receive delivery; Sort by class;  Deliver for first day of school

o         HELP WANTED:  Volunteers for sorting at end of summer

¨      Sheets & Treats

o        WHAT: Annual wrapping paper and candy sale

o        WHEN: October, November, December

o        CHAIRPERSON RESPONSIBILITIES:  Distribute catalogs, order forms to all students; Coordinate order, delivery, separation of items; Organize volunteers to be present at delivery of items

o        HELP WANTED:  Volunteers for sorting and distribution of items at end of sale

¨      Sixth Grade Promotion

o        WHAT: Coordinate all activities around sixth grade promotion

o        WHEN: Spring through last day of school

o        CHAIRPERSON RESPONSIBILITIES:  Coordinate activities and volunteers around slide show, memory book, pool party, refreshments;  Work with administration on ceremony activities as needed

o        HELP WANTED:  Individual committee chairs for slide show, memory book, pool party

¨      Social

o        WHAT: Run events to bring students and parents together in fun and seasonal venues, including Pasta and Movie in the fall, Ice Skating in winter and Parent-Teacher softball game in spring

o        WHEN: Ongoing

o        CHAIRPERSON RESPONSIBILITIES:  Coordinate activities and volunteers around social events;  Communicate events within school community

o        HELP WANTED:  Smiling, helpful parents who have time to help on the dates of the events.  No meetings required.

¨      Valentine’s Day Baskets / Community Service

o        WHAT: Coordinate items, put together, distribute baskets for various community members to be recognized – police, crossing guards, ambulance squad, etc

o        WHEN: February

o        CHAIRPERSON RESPONSIBILITIES:  Work with K Club advisor and kids to coordinate individually wrapped items, donated baskets;  Assemble baskets and goodies;  Distribute to previously identified community members to be recognized and thanked

o        HELP WANTED:  Bakers, Basket donations, Volunteers to assemble and supervise delivery
