WHAT IS SCRIP?

And why you should care!

It’s no secret that Glen Ridge receives less than 5% back from the state, despite having a very economically efficient school system.  In an effort to create an immediate and additional source of funding, the Glen Ridge Scrip Program was launched in 2003.  Scrip is the most efficient fundraiser in town. And it does so without asking anyone to give a penny!

Scrip has earned more than $60,000 since 2003.  The money is spent on capital improvements to the school buildings. Projects funded by scrip include: the renovation of the High School bleachers, paving the playground at Linden Avenue, Ridgewood Avenue and High School, exterior trim repair and painting at Forest Avenue and the exterior refurbishment of the Ridgewood Avenue Auditorium front steps.

Scrip is the Answer – But what is it?

It’s gift cards from our local grocery stores and big name retailers. Here’s how it works. You buy a gift card from the Glen Ridge Scrip Program and the Glen Ridge schools get a percentage.  It doesn’t cost you a thing - You pay $100 for a $100 gift card – and the Glen Ridge schools get $5.  The Glen Ridge Scrip Program offers two ways to buy scrip: monthly Grocery Scrip and Holiday Scrip.

Monthly Grocery Scrip

Grocery Scrip gives 5% of your purchase back to the schools. Kings, A&P, Shoprite, Stop & Shop and Pathmark all participate in Glen Ridge’s Scrip program.  If you purchase $200 of grocery gift cards a month, for 10 months, the schools will receive $100. If 100 families in Glen Ridge do this, the schools will receive $10,000. If 400 families do this, the schools will receive $40,000!  What does it cost you? Nothing. That’s right, we could easily be contributing $40,000 a year to our school system without donating a dime!

Worried about your Frequent Flyer Miles or credit card points?  You don’t have to buy a lot of scrip to make a difference.  Spend as little as $100 a month on scrip, and pay for the rest of your groceries with your credit card.  The SCRIP team is currently looking into using Paypal for credit cards – if cardholders are willing to pay the transaction fee.  More information to follow.

Get started with SCRIP today! Use the order form on the back of this page and refer to the Q&A for help completing the form.  Note our order deadline is October 13th for this month.  Every order helps!!

Holiday Scrip

Holiday Scrip is offered two times a year (December and Spring) and includes many popular stores including:  Pottery Barn/Williams Sonoma, Blockbuster, Starbucks, J. Crew, the Gap, CVS, Bed, Bath & Beyond, the Container Store and many, many more! The percentages given to the school for Holiday Scrip are much higher, up to 25%. These make great gifts for teachers, babysitters, pet sitters, and friends and family. You can stock up on cards to use and give throughout the year.  Forms will be backpacked and emailed November 10, 2008, order will be due December 1st and cards delivered on December 12th.
